Sondra Whalen, APR, Director of Student Programs and Communications at Vernon Verona Sherrill Central School District in New York
In her position, Sondra establishes communications strategy and cultivates enhanced student learning opportunities. Sondra is passionate about elevating the field of public relations and has garnered recognition for her insightful and engaging presentations at state and national events. With a focus on empowering colleagues, she helps PR professionals build a solid foundation in communications science and data analytics. She believes that this approach demystifies public relations work, allowing practitioners to advocate with confidence, showcase their value, and create a common starting point for stakeholder partnerships.In her day-to-day work, Sondra focuses on storytelling and creating genuine relationships within the school community. Her creativity and dedication to these efforts have been recognized with multiple awards from the NY School Public Relations Association and a Golden Achievement Award from the National School Public Relations Association.
Dr. Dennis Pauli, Superintendent, Edgerton School District
Dr. Dennis Pauli has served the field of education for thirty-eight years as an elementary school teacher, elementary school principal, assistant superintendent of curriculum and instruction, and in his current role as superintendent of the Edgerton School District. Under his leadership he has successfully introduced academic programs, systems, and processes that have dramatically improved student outcomes. During his 15 year tenure as superintendent of the Edgerton School District, Dennis has effectively led initiatives focused on building teacher and leadership capacity, improving district communication, and increasing opportunities for students. He is passionate about student and staff social emotional well-being which has resulted in higher engagement and satisfaction.
Dennis is a dynamic communications expert with extensive experience in public speaking, media relations, and strategic messaging. With a passion for storytelling, Dennis has captivated audiences at local, state, and national levels, offering valuable insights into effective communication strategies. As a seasoned presenter and consultant, Dennis empowers organizations to connect with their audiences, drive engagement, and achieve their goals. Known for delivering impactful and engaging presentations, Dennis brings a wealth of knowledge and real-world experience to the stage, making complex concepts accessible and actionable for all.

Jodi Fiedler, Internal Communications Officer, Madison Metropolitan School District
Jodi is a communications professional with more than 20 years of experience. She has worked in school communications and public relations for six years and currently serves at the second-largest school district in Wisconsin. Previously, she worked for three years at a large, urban school district in Minnesota. Before her time in public education, Jodi worked for over a decade in healthcare communications. She is known as someone who can bring ideas to life while having strategic oversight in the work. Previously attendees commented that she does a great job of going beyond just the basics to help you bring ideas back to your district that create meaningful and impactful outcomes.
Kevin Hickman, Senior Client Executive with Nexus Solutions and former WSPRA President
Kevin has invested 25 years of his career helping educators and administrators plan, fund, design, build and commission effective spaces in a world of transforming educational delivery. Kevin plays a significant role supporting Districts with strategies around School Board, staff and community engagement, defining funding sources, and creating long-term facility plans.
Andrea Gribble, Founder of #SocialSchool4EDU
Andrea Gribble is an author, podcast host, and founder of #SocialSchool4EDU. Her mission is to help schools celebrate their students and staff, and connect to their communities through social media. She is the author of “Social Media for Schools: Proven Storytelling Strategies & Ideas for Celebrating Your Students & Staff - While Keeping Your Sanity” and hosts a weekly podcast, “Mastering Social Media for Schools.”
Chelsea Janke, Vice President Integrated Marketing CEL Marketing PR Design
Chelsea is a nationally-known speaker and school advocate with more than 17 years of experience helping organizations bridge the gaps between communications and technology. She is always on the go, working to enhance school PR, marketing strategies, and websites that are creative, effective, and lasting. She is respected within the field for helping schools tell their story and interact with stakeholders by using effective communication tools.
Travis Judell, Communications Specialist, School District of Holmen
Travis Judell serves as the communications specialist for the School District of Holmen, where his love for photography and videography, combined with his storytelling skills, plays a crucial role in sharing the stories of the district’s vibrant community. Before joining the district in 2021, Travis had a dynamic career in the television news industry, where he honed his craft as a news and sports videographer and reporter. He began his career at WKBT News 8 in La Crosse, Wisconsin, and later moved to WXOW News 19, also in La Crosse.
During his years in television, Travis covered a wide range of high-profile events that kept him at the heart of the action. Whether he was capturing the excitement of Packers, Badgers, Bucks, or Brewers games or documenting the significance of presidential visits and other major events, Travis quickly gained a reputation for his ability to tell compelling stories through video. His dedication to his craft did not go unnoticed, as he was recognized with awards, including multiple Wisconsin Broadcast Association awards, an Edward R. Murrow Award, and several Emmy nominations for his work in journalism.
In 2021, Travis transitioned from the fast-paced world of news to education, bringing with him a wealth of knowledge and experience in visual storytelling. At the School District of Holmen, he continues to apply his skills to highlight the many achievements, programs, and people that make the district unique. Through photography and videography, Travis brings the district’s stories to life, helping to strengthen the connection between the schools, students, families, and the broader community.
Shana R. Lewis, Attorney and Shareholder, Renning, Lewis & Lacy, s.c.
Shana has extensive experience in labor and employment law, school and higher education law, and municipal law. Shana’s practice focuses on representing school districts throughout Wisconsin on issues ranging from labor and employment matters to pupil discipline, open meetings, public records, and other matters of import to Wisconsin schools. Shana also has significant experience conducting investigations for private and public sector entities concerning allegations of harassment, bullying, and discrimination involving staff and/or students. In addition to her legal practice, Shana serves as adjunct faculty at Edgewood College and serves on the District Board for Madison Area Technical College. She is a member of the Wisconsin School Attorneys Association (WSAA).
Melissa McConnell Manager, Professional Development & Member Engagement, NSPRA
Melissa McConnell retired with over 28 years in public education in June 2022. She spent the first 21 years of her career as a library media coordinator and technology integration specialist. Both of these roles were instrumental in helping her learn more about the staff, students, families, and community where she worked, as well as the value of quality communications at every level of the organization. Those skills and relationships directly contributed to her success as a communications specialist for the last seven years of her tenure. In August 2022, she joined the staff of the National School Public Relations Association, NSPRA, as their Manager of Professional Development and Member Engagement where she thrives on providing high-quality, relevant, and impactful learning opportunities for more than 2900 school communications professionals and other educational leaders.
She loves helping others identify ways to digitally separate their personal and professional lives, and strongly encourages people to invest time learning more about the tool they would never leave home without: their phone.
She lives in Overland Park, Kansas with her husband, Michael, and they are enjoying watching their daughters graduate college and start their "big girl" lives.
Terri McHugh, APR – Executive Director of Community Relations for Schaumburg School District 54 in Illinois and North Central Region Vice President for NSPRA
In her 25 years in school public relations, Terri has developed and executed numerous strategic communications programs and also has had a variety of experiences responding to issues she didn’t plan for, including school crisis situations and media storms. With communication being a priority in any crisis situation, she became the district’s crisis prevention coordinator in 2016, training on FEMA’s National Incident Management System (NIMS), becoming a ALICE certified instructor and engaging in other training and collaboration opportunities with first responders and their public information officers. When she took over that responsibility, her district had a crisis plan, but didn’t have a crisis communications plan. She knows what it’s like to respond to a crisis without a plan, and what it’s like to respond when your entire district understands their roles in a crisis.
Dave Novy, District Administrator at Brodhead School District
Dave is a longtime educator who started his career as a math and elementary teacher in the School District of Hillsboro, before becoming Elementary Principal at Owen-Withee, Elementary Principal at Brodhead, and now District Administrator at Brodhead. Dave is actively involved in the Brodhead community and takes a leadership role in engaging with the School Board, staff and community leaders to address funding and facility challenges.
Laura Pedersen, Attorney and Shareholder, Renning, Lewis & Lacy, s.c.
Before joining the firm, Laura worked in civil litigation as an associate attorney for a Milwaukee-based law firm. During law school, she clerked for a civil litigation firm and fellowed for the Milwaukee Justice Center and Milwaukee Volunteer Legal Clinic. Before entering law school, Laura worked as a special educator and reading interventionist in Seattle Public Schools and as an English teacher in Milwaukee Public Schools. Ultimately, it was Laura’s experience in teaching that brought her into the legal field and to Renning, Lewis and Lacy. Laura’s legal experience involves drafting court documents, representing clients in hearings, interviewing and counseling potential clients in anticipation of their legal matters, evaluating and interpreting laws, and taking depositions.
