School communicators are looking forward to a fresh start in 2016, and WSPRA member Heidi Feller of the Reedsburg School District is no exception. Feller, the Volunteer Coordinator and Web and Social Media Coordinator for the district, set the stage for more effective family communications in 2015 with a fresh new website. Now, she’s looking forward to taking things to the next level.

Big plans for 2016

“Our recent website launch certainly moved us in the right direction,” Feller said. “The addition of Facebook this spring will provide our families and community members with an opportunity to connect with us on a different level. Social media allows our parents to ‘be in the classroom’ with their children.”

Feller and other smart communicators make the connection between family involvement and student success. “It is my hope that our posts on Facebook will give parents another avenue to be in touch with the educational process and keep them in the loop with happenings on a daily basis,” she said.

Brand new website

Reedsburg launched a brand new logo and website this school year, overhauling the old site from top to bottom to create a site families and staff would actually use. “To say it was a labor of love would be an understatement,” Feller said. “It truly took a team to finish this and we are very proud of the result.”

Top 3 tips for web redesign

Here are Feller’s top 3 tips if you’re thinking about undertaking a redesign:

  1. Enlist an army. Engage employees over to help and consider partnering with your CESA.
  2. Take some time. Recognize it takes time to develop a quality product.
  3. Be in it for the long haul. The launch is the beginning of a whole new ballgame. A website is a living and breathing entity that requires constant updating and revising.

Look to WSPRA for help

Feller points to her WSPRA membership as a helpful way to keep up-to-date on the latest in school communications. “We glean tips and ideas from other members to tweak and use,” she said. “Many times it is beneficial to see the work others do elsewhere to inspire me in my own position.”
